The Australian National Groundwater Data Transfer Standard

4.8 Combining of Standard Codes

For many attributes, it is necessary to combine standard codes to depict particular information. For example, a groundwater sample may go through a processing sequence in preparation for laboratory chemical analysis. A sample that has been 0.45 micron filtered, acidised with nitric acid and chilled in a refrigerator would have a treatment code of ‘FLT45+PAN+TCHR’.

The standard joins are:
‘-’

A hyphen used to describe a transitional or merging situation
eg. ‘BL-GY’ to describe the colour blue-grey
‘MS-CS’ for a grain size distribution from medium to coarse.

‘+’

A plus sign used when separate and distinct populations or processes are found
eg. ‘GR+BR’ for a separate green colour and a separate brown colour
‘4+5’ for a groundwater_source consisting of construction_elements 4 and 5.

‘/’

A forward slash used when the attribute is either one or the other listed
eg. ‘GDF/GAT’ for either differential GPS or autonomous GPS was used to locate site
