As part of the Murray-Darling Basin Soil Information Strategy we demonstrate how the new soils data and other data can be used to assist land management decisions in the Basin. Computer-based geographic information about the soil, vegetation, climate and land slope was put into a decision support system called ASSESS - A System for Selecting Suitable Sites. The ASSESS interface is a menu-based set of functions that allow the user to model the relative suitability of areas for a particular land use. This is achieved by reviewing information relevant to the land use and then assigning suitability classes to the characteristics. ASSESS allows us to review the information and change the values or suitability we choose according to the purpose. In the following pages you can review the soil, climate, vegetation and land slope qualities and some typical interpretations placed on them for the purpose of growing trees.
