How ASSESS is used

In the Murray-Darling Basin, and elsewhere in Australia's farmland, tree planting is needed to help:

  • stop, slow or reverse land degradation
  • support endangered ecosystems
  • increase financial return from agriculture
  • provide income from wood products
  • enhance water quality.

Soil types, climate, land slope and existing vegetation are things we need to consider when we think about where we can grow trees.

So where are trees most needed and how easy or hard might they be to grow?

By using computer-based geographic information and decision support software we can identify areas that need or could benefit from tree plantings. We can also look at the environmental conditions that might make this easy or difficult.

See for yourself how different areas of the Murray-Darling Basin rate when we decide to plant trees.
