Overview

This site has been created to promote awareness and access to key soil information for the Murray-Darling Basin. Industry, land managers, regional planners, scientists and educators are some of the groups to whom the data is likely to be of significant use. The development of this site was part of the Murray-Darling Basin Soil Information Strategy (MDBSIS) project funded by the Murray-Darling Basin Commission (MDBC).

The MDBSIS project collated existing digital spatial soil and geology data from relevant Australian State and Federal sources, and subsequently developed new data on soil-landforms and geology.

MDBSIS is a collaborative project between MDBC, CSIRO Land and Water (managing agency), sections of the Bureau of Rural Sciences (BRS) of the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forests (formerly Department of Primary Industries and Energy), NSW Department of Land and Water Conservation, Victorian Department of Natural Resources and Environment, Primary Industries SA, SA Department for Transport, Urban Planning and the Arts and Queensland Department of Primary Industries.

The success of the project was due to the cooperation of state and federal agencies for data exchange and information. In unmapped areas, geology, Landsat MSS data, and digital terrain models were used to develop suitable models for extrapolation of existing soil maps. For more information on the project refer to Publications.

Soil and geomorphology survey data are courtesy of CSIRO.

The Soil-landforms and lithology geographic information systems were funded and approved for public release by the MDBC.

The Coastline and River Basin Boundary data are Copyright Commonwealth of Australia, AUSLIG and the State and Territory members of the Agriculture and Resource Management Council of Australia and New Zealand. The data were provided by AUSLIG, Australia's national mapping agency.
