It highlights the areas of the MDB with no soils coverage other than the Atlas of Australian Soils and presents the attribute database established to store and allow integration and re-interpretation of the various mapped soil and land unit data sets that exist within the Murray-Darling Basin. The report also illustrates some interpretations made possible with the GIS and attribute databases described in the report. Methods investigated for developing models from existing soil surveys to extrapolate to unmapped areas are discussed as well as the application of some of these methods to produce the new soil-landforms map for the MDB. The reliability and data quality of the new map are also addressed. Download

of the Murray-Darling Basin - Simplified Lithostratigraphic Groupings
A digital database for the geology of the Murray-Darling Basin was compiled from existing 1:250 000 scale and 1:100 000 scale geological and metallogenic mapping. Simplified lithostratigraphic groupings were applied to provide fundamental surficial geology data for the Murray-Darling Basin Soil Information Strategy project. These groupings recognise that within major tectonic units, specific lithologies can be characteristic of particular stratigraphic periods. The integrated geology provides a relatively seamless dataset that gives an overview of the geology of the Murray-Darling Basin for basin-wide studies. The datasets produced by the Murray-Darling Basin Soil Information Strategy project are available via the World Wide Web. As part of this web package, the derived dataset of the "Geology of the Murray-Darling Basin - Simplified Lithostratigraphic Groupings" is able to be viewed and queried. Information is presented at a basin-wide scale, sub-catchment or 1:250 000 scale mapsheet level. Download pdf file of this publication (250k) New geotechnical
maps for the Murray-Darling Basin The Murray-Darling Basin Soil Information Strategy (MDBSIS) project was a collaborative project between CSIRO Land and Water, the Australian Geological Survey Organisation (AGSO) and the National Resources Information Centre (NRIC) of the Department of Primary Industries and Energy. It was partly funded by the Murray-Darling Basin Commission under NRMS D5038. The success of the project depended on the cooperation of State land resource agencies. The overall goal of the MDBSIS project was to provide information on soils for natural resources management and planning at the Catchment Management Committee level or broader region. The project collated all available soils information within a consistent framework, in a common Geographical Information System (GIS) and database format. At the same time, areas of MDB with gaps in soils coverage were identified. Several new maps for the MDB have been produced during the life of the project - the most challenging one is a unified, seamless, soil-landforms map of the MDB at 1:250,000 (Bui, 1998). |
